Help!!!
So the last few days have not been without drama. So, I woke up on Tuesday with a 103.1 fever and lots of pain in my left breast. Brady took me to the doc and it turns out I had mastitis. Third baby, nursing experiencing reads 2 years worth, and I have never gotten mastitis. Starting week two of Miss Ruby's life and I we get mastitis. Turns out, even though very painful; as long as you start antibotics on time its stent is only about 24hours. My HUGE dilema is I lost the milk in my left breast. I am FREAKING OUT!!!!! I mean, I have 12 months of nursing left for this little one, on one breast? and is this enough to nurish her and fill her? I talked to the lactation specialist and she has me pumping every three hours on that breast for 15 minutes. It isn't that bad, a little emotionally draining. But in the meantime, I am scared to death that miss Ruby isn't getting enough to eat. Lactations specialist says it may take 2 weeks to get milk back in that breast but my milk supply may never be what it was in that breast, WHAT!? I said. So I am turning to my nursing mommy's or anyone that kows anything about the subject. One mommy told me that there was a drug out there to help my milk supply. We all know how I am about drugs but if it will work I am up for it at this point. I will be devistated if I can't nurse my last baby (crying as I am typing) ANY ADVICE???

Re: Help!!!
Danielle,
I know you don't know me, but I attended UCA nursing school and was a Delta Zeta for 2 years. I am on Tenille's blog list. I'm also an L/d nurse and mother of 2- my youngest is 9 weeks old. Fenugrek (sp?) is an herbal supplement that helps with milk production. I have also heard of Reglan to help, although it is a prescription you would have to get from a doctor and is used for help with digestion. There is also a website www.gotbreastpump.com that has a lot of helpful information, but keep pumping and you shouldn't have any problems. Hope you don't mind my response- I bloghop at night while trying to stay awake nursing my own baby. Good Luck and don't fret.
Re: Help!!!
Oh, Danielle, I'm so sorry. Coming from a breastfeeding mom and an NICU nurse, this will pass and it will be o.k. even though it feels like the end of the world. I agree with Holly. Fenugreek is all herbal which works really well from what I have researched and from what my lacation friends have told me secretly ( They can't tell you about herbal meds!) and reglan is suggested alot with our premiee mom's. Reglan is a prescription, which I'm sure Dr. W will prescribe to you (he's such a breastfeeding advocate). The reglan is taper dosed over a few weeks. Some say that it makes the mother sluggish and possibly a little depressed, but most say they had no problems. The baby definitely has no side effects. I took it and never noticed a difference in my energy level just that my milk did increase. Continue to pump like you are and keep in touch with the Baptist Lactaion warmline 202-7378. You can call, e-mail or go in for a consult. They will even weigh Ruby for you, so that you know she's gaining weight and getting enough to eat. If you need anything call me at work 202-2812 fri-sat-sun. Ruby is beautiful! Congrats! P.S. I know the "RING OF FIRE"! Bless your heart! Megan Rhodes Miller
Re: Help!!!
hey hon. gosh do i know how helpless you feel. i took reglan for a few weeks with brennon. i dont know if it was necessary or not but i felt reassured. i know it will be hard and take lots of time and work to pump but its worth it. hope it gets better soon.
Re: Help!!!
Oh, how I feel your pain. I never had any trouble with my girls but my milk supply was soooo low with Jed. I begged and begged from something to help but my dr was out on vacation and the other docs would not prescribe to me. I was devestated. You have received some great advise so far. I'll be praying for you.
Re: Help!!!
hello, you don't know me, but i "hopped" onto your post from amy's . i am so sorry to hear of your troubles. as an or nurse, and mother of two small children (one who is still nursing at nine months) i feel your pain. i must agree with your other "helpers". i took reglan with my son, and it worked wonders (and had no side effects). i will keep you in my prayers. :) you have a beautiful family!
